I have lived in St. Louis off and on for the past 36 years. This is the reciepe I was given that long ago. I use Jiffy yellow cake mix since new mixes have so much oil in them it fights with the butter. It makes a courser cake bottom.

I'm from St. Louis, and Gooey Butter Cake really is a tradition there! Now I have to make my own, and this is exactly the recipe I use. I have to note that so far I've found Duncan Hines Butter Yellow cake mix to work the best. Pillsbury's yellow cake
