Stir in buttermilk until mixture is incorporated. Remove to floured board and hand knead until dough is well blended and pliable. Cut in half. Form each into a ball. Knead in dried fruit if desired. Place on baking sheets. Brush tops with water. Dust with wheat germ, oats or dried herbs. Cut a cross into each top. Bake in a preheated 400F oven 10 minutes and reduce heat to 325F. Bake about another 25 to 30 minutes. Serve immediately or let cool, place in bag and store room temperature for a day or so. Yield: Makes 2 loaves or 20 rolls or 1 loaf and 8 to 10 rolls.
