home > recipes > dessert > microwave shanghai gao
from NY, US 1 pound Mochiko ( sweet rice flour ) 12 oz dried red dates ( about 1 cup ) 3/4 c sugar 1/2 cup vegetable oil 3/4 to 1 cup water 1/2 cup shelled pine nuts A Chinese New Year's dessert which appeared in my newspaper. It looked interesting. Please note I have not tried this! Gao ( sweet pudding like dessert ) used to take days to prepare because of the syrup preparation and the pounding of rice to make the flour. This recipe is modernized so one can make it at home instead of buying it from shops Cover dates with water, bring to boil and simmer about 45 minutes until tender.. Cool and remove pits. Line a 10 x 5 inch microwave safe dish with microsafe plastic wrap. In a bowl combine the rice flour, sugar, oil and water and mix well. Stir in the drained pitted dates and nuts.. Pour mixture into prepared dish. Cover with plastic wrap. Micro high for 7 minutes, rotating the dish if oven has no turntable. Carefully turn Gao over and micro on high another 3 minutes. Let stand uncovered for 30 minutes. Invert onto platter. Cool and cut into serving pieces Source: Linda Chang
