A winetasting term describing an aromatic characteristic exemplified by a warm-earth smell. It's sometimes found in VINTAGES produced during a hot growing season when extreme sun exposure can cause moisture-deprived grapes to dehydrate. In MADEIRA (see listing) wines, a process called estufagem "bakes" the wines, which produces their characteristic tangy, burnt-caramel flavor.
